You may think you are still the same healthy, young woman you once used to be, but with the busy and tiring life you have since you became a mother, you may not be getting the enough amount of Vitamin C a woman should have everyday to keep you healthy- which is 90 milligrams daily.
Why should we care? Well, there are a lot of surprising reasons why Vitamin C is very important especially for moms like me. I appreciated the health benefits of Vitamin C more because of my recent discovery (which I will be sharing with you in a short while so please continue reading) so I am sharing with you some important reasons why we women need Vitamin C, other than the scary fact that without it, we’d all have SCURVY.
But first, what is Vitamin C?
Also known as L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means if you take in more than what your body needs, you pee it out. Because fat-soluble vitamins like A and D are mostly stored in the fat tissues and liver, and are eliminated more slowly. Our body doesn’t make vitamin C itself so we have to consume it, either in foods that naturally contain it or that are fortified with it, or with supplements.
We usually associate or picture an orange when we think of vitamin C. Well, the fruit, as well as other citrus fruits, is a vitamin C powerhouse. When you sneeze, you may also quickly think of taking this vitamin for cold prevention. But vitamin C is a lot more than that.
So here are the top 5 reasons why moms should drink Vitamin C everyday:
1. VITAMIN C HELPS US PREVENT COLD & DISEASES.
Moms do not have the right to get sick! That’s the reality. And to avoid getting sick, having enough Vitamin C in the body could really count! Vitamin C has shown to actually help with prevention of the common cold as well as shortening and treating this illness. Taking vitamin C for colds and flu can reduce the risk of developing further complications, such as pneumonia and lung infections. It avoids stomach upset and diarrhea too!
Conditions like heart disease, arthritis, cancer, depression and Alzheimer’s disease can also be prevented. And those with the highest concentrations of vitamin C in their blood were associated with 42% lower stroke risk than those with the lowest concentrations.
2. VITAMIN C HELPS US STAY YOUNG
Oh, we love this! As we age, we look for ways to keep our skin smooth and our face wrinkle free, right? Vitamin C IS A NATURAL ANTIOXIDANT, which means it helps protect against damage from free radicals, or molecules that can damage your cells. Your body is always generating free radicals, but certain practices like smoking, sunbathing and even exercising can bring on more! That helps explain why researches show that vitamin C can be helpful for recovery from intense exercise.
Vitamin C is the key for skin, hair, teeth, bone and joint, and cardiovascular health because it helps your body process collagen which keeps those tissues young. Vitamin C affects cells on the inside and outside of the body. Higher vitamin C intakes were associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkled appearance, dryness of the skin, and a better skin-aging appearance.
A recent meta-analysis even showed Vitamin C was beneficial to individuals whose immune system was weakened due to stress – which is very common for us moms to experience! Vitamin C is one of the nutrients sensitive to stress, and it’s the first nutrient to be depleted in alcoholics, smokers, and obese individuals, it makes it an ideal marker for overall health. So when you feel stressed out with the kids or with work (or your husband) drink a capsule of Vitamin C! Let’s not allow stress to make us look older!
3. VITAMIN C HELPS IN WEIGHT CONTROL
Some research has linked vitamin C consumption with a lower body mass index and body fat percentage. A lot of women change figure and increase weight after giving birth. Having enough Vitamin C in our body can also help us regain the old us, the old size. With proper exercise and diet too, of course. So put them jeans on, momma!
4. VITAMIN C HELPS MAINTAIN EYE HEALTH
Our eyes contain high concentrations of vitamin C, which may help explain why some research has shown that people with vitamin C-rich diets may be less likely to get cataracts. Of course, we need our eyes to function perfectly until the end of time so we could watch and see our kids’ and grandchildren’s milestones throughout our lifetime, right?
5. VITAMIN C PROTECTS MEMORY AND THINKING AS WE AGE
One of the best vitamins for memory and focus is Vitamin C. It is effective because it helps with the production of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that controls attention. It also protects the brain from damage caused by oxidative stress. Low levels of vitamin C have been linked to an impaired ability to think and remember. And for mothers, good memory is very important. Be it for the schedule of your first born’s recital, or for reminiscing happy quality time you spent with the family.
I’m one lucky momma that my little girl loves eating fruits so much! <3
Five servings of fruits and vegetables per day should be more than enough to meet the daily vitamin C we need. Vitamin C-rich foods include oranges, grapefruits, sweet peppers, strawberries, broccoli, and potatoes. But for most of us who cannot afford to prepare or consume as much daily, there is VITAGREEN-C! Oh boy, I am so excited to share with you about this and how it helped me see differently.
