You might have noticed the popular home decor or event backdrop trends lately. Nope, it’s not grandma’s crochet, it’s called MODERN MACRAMÉ!

Macramé is a type of textile created using knotting techniques, as opposed to weaving or knitting. The knots are square and form full-hitch and double half-hitches. The craft required only inexpensive and accessible materials like cotton twine, hemp, leather or yarn, with various beads used to enhance the piece. Macramé is basically the art of knotting cord or string in patterns to make decorative articles.

In the Western Hemisphere, macramé is believed to have originated with 13th-century Arab weavers. These artisans knotted the excess thread and yarn along the edges of hand-loomed fabrics into decorative fringes on bath towels, shawls, and veils.

It was introduced into England at the court of Mary II in the late 17th century. Queen Mary taught the art of macramé to her ladies-in-waiting. Sailors made macramé objects in off-hours while at sea and sold or bartered them when they landed, thus spreading the art to places like China and the New World.

I got the chance to attend one of her macramé workshops in her studio at Quezon City. Aside from discovering about macrame and the relaxation it could bring a stressed mom such as me, the experience was so fun because I got to spend time with fellow moms during the workshop!

Teacher Jaya is patient, she knows what she’s talking about, and most of all, you will intently listen to her because she’s pretty! <3

You may opt to use a mask if the fibers make your nose itchy. Tried but removed it after a minute.

There are so many amazing things you could create with macrame art! Aside from the popular wall decors it’s most commonly used for, you can make purses, earrings and necklaces, plant hangers, tumbler holders, wreaths and even Christmas ornaments!  The possibilities are endless!

If you’re looking for a new hobby, a creative outlet, I suggest you try out macrame. Many people enjoy doing it for a craft. In fact, some people believe that macramé is a natural therapy for improving mental abilities, strengthening arms and joints, improving concentration, and calming the mind. It doesn’t require great artistic skill but requires only being in a meditative mood and carefully weaving into knots and cords. I believe this is something that moms of today will enjoy doing when they want to relax and bring out the creativity in them.

Love,

Momma Nish
